Lithium borohydride - LiBH4
| Formula weight | 21.78 |
| Chemical purity | min. 95% |
| Melting point | 280oC, decomp. |
| Density | 0.666 g/ml |
| Solubility | ethers, amines |
Lithium borohydride is white crystalline powder which must be handled under protected atmosphere of inert gas. It could be stored in a tightly closed container without frequent opening for several years. If kept in a frequently opened vessel the reagent decomposes rapidly owing to the extremely hygroscopic nature. Contact with cellulose material (paper, cloth, etc.) will generally result in spontaneous combustion within several minutes.
Application: Lithium borohydride is versatile reducing agent for reduction of acylchlorides, esters, aldehydes, ketones and epoxides to corresponding alcohols. Carboxylic acids, nitriles and nitro compounds are not reduced. N,N-Disubstituted acid amides are slowly reduced to aldehydes.

Sodium borohydride - NaBH4
| Formula weight | 37.83 |
| Chemical purity | 99 % |
| Melting point | 400 °C, decomp. |
| Density | 1.074 g/ml |
| Solubility | DME,DG, liq.NH3, amines |
Sodium borohydride is white hygroscopic powder, readily soluble in water and other polar solvents. The aqueous solution can be stabilized by the addition of alkali to give pH of 9. It is insoluble in diethyl ether and slightly soluble in THF. Methanol is a good solvent, but reacts with the reagent. The decomposition can be minimized by adding sodium methoxide.
Application: Sodium borohydride is very mild reducing agent. Aldehydes and ketones are reduced readily to the corresponding alcohols. Acylchlorides may be reduced in the form of their S-triazolinium chlorides to the corresponding aldehydes. Acyclic carboxylic anhydrides are reduced to alcohols and cyclic anhydrides to lactones. Most of other functional groups do not react.
From sodium borohydride can be easy prepared a row of modified reduction agents with selective reduction effect
(NaBH4 + AlCl3, NaBH4 + BF3)

Sodium bis(2-methoxyethoxo)dihydridoaluminate
- SYNHYDRID
NaAlH2(OCH2CH2OCH3)2
Katchem spol. s r.o. distributes this compound only in the Czech Republic and neighborough states.

| Temperature of decomposition | >200 °C |
| Density of the solution | 1.03 g/ml (20°C) |
| Viscosity (mPa.s/20°C) | cca 65 |
| Solubility | ethers, aromatic hydrocarbons |
Sodium bis(2-methoxyethoxo)dihydridoaluminate (SYNHYDRID) is supplied as 70% solution in toluene. After evaporation of toluene is there the possibility to dissolve the residue in benzene, xylene, THF, diethyl ether, etc. In most of cases is sufficient to dilute original toluene solution with chosen solvent. By short-term exposition to moist air (e.g. by ad measurement of the needed amount) arise only negligible losses in the active hydrogen content. Even if the reaction solvent would boil, it is not necessary to protect reaction mixture against the influence of air moisture. Only during long-term reaction process (more than 2 hours) is recommended to protect the reaction mixture by standard way (solid sodium hydroxide or silica gel). SYNHYDRID is highly reactive but as against to it, it is very stable to air oxygen oxidation. High thermal resistance enables quite safe reduction course by 170°C.
Contact of SYNHYDRID with cellulose material (paper, cloth, etc.) will generally result in spontaneous combustion within several minutes. For the decontamination dry sand is recommended.
Application: SYNHYDRID is safe and selective reduction agent and as a rule can well substitute in chemical production much more dangerous Lithium aluminium hydride. SYNHYDRID is used for reductions in organic laboratory as well as in industry. Reduced compound is usually dosed in parts to SYNHYDRID solution in reaction vessel. Because of high SYNHYDRID stability, reverse dosage is also possible. SYNHYDRID is able selectively reduce compounds containing in molecule carbonyl and carboxyl groups as aldehydes, ketones, oxims, carboxylic acids, esters, anhydrides, acylhalogenides, lactons, amides, imides, lactams, nitrils, nitrocompounds and halogenated hydrocarbons. SYNHYDRID is especially suitable for continuous isothermic polymerization of 6-caprolactame by temperature up to 170°C.
